Description | Physicians and psychotherapists often meet patients presenting physical problems in whom a positive somatic finding is either completely absent or does not explain the presented symptoms sufficiently. The prevalence of patients with medically unexplained somatic symptoms (MUSS) is estimated to be approximately 40% by some authors. Several qualitative studies show that these patients have specific needs in communication with physicians which are often left unfulfilled. In this paper, we will present the results of a questionnaire survey (N = 550), through which we sought to answer the question of whether patients with MUSS differ from other patients in the communication style they prefer in their physicians, how they are satisfied with the communication, and whether their satisfaction predicts the change of MUSS over time. |
