Description | The present volume came into being with two intentions: to reflect on the roots of Byzantine studies in Central Europe in the interwar period and to celebrate the founding of the Hans Belting Library in Brno. A common idea underlies both, namely, that Byzantine studies are a bridge between cultures. In the present historical moment, with the rebirth of nationalism and xenophobia, Byzantine (and Mediterranean) research takes on a new significance. By its very essence, Byzantium cannot be linked to one single country and thus, as it did between the two wars, becomes a transnational reality, which – sometimes unintentionally – opens to the “other”. |
