Description | The study discusses the translational choices the authors had to make in the translation of the play by Titus Maccius Plautus that was not translated to Czech, the Curculio (Weevil). The most tricky obstacles encountered in the course of translation were the question of how to translate the so-called speaking names, the names that characterize the individual character by either its form or contents; and various aspects of Plautine humour, such as language jokes and puns based on Latin vocabulary, morphology and syntax, or on historical and cultural phenomena that would not be probably understandable to modern readers/spectators. |
