Description Roman ohne U Contemporary Austrian writer Judith W. Taschler is based on two parallel story lines - the first one describing the struggle of the protagonist Thomas to survive in the gulag, and the second one currently taking place, recounts the current pitfalls of our society and the life of one of the major heroes. The whole story is also dominated by a significant psychological discoloration - specifically the theme of trauma. The central question of this paper is what problems relate to the integration of historical material into the literary environment of the modern Austrian novel? Why and how the author worked with the facts, or how did they change them? Can literature be regarded as a historical source? Can literature and history be strictly separated from each other? Apart from answering these questions, the contribution also deals with the explanation of the genre of the historical novel and the motif of the trauma.
