Description The article deals with the process of evolution from the point of view of social sciences, whose key components are usually considered competition, sustainable development and quality of life. It is divided into three main parts. The first one focuses on assessing the relationship between regional competitiveness and sustainable development. In this context, the hypothesis is verified that in the long term, both concepts are merging. The next part discusses their interactions with the component of quality of life, including the irreplaceable role of integration processes as the basis of social movement. The final part describes the possibilities of conceptualizing the findings with an emphasis on improving the quality of the business and social environment and the evaluation of the effectiveness of the projects. In this context, the article closely follows to rethinking of the European Union's cohesion policy. Keywords: competitiveness, sustainability, quality of life, integration, cohesion policy
