Description | The presentation will offer an overview of innovative musicals which have been performed on Broadway stages in the last decade, as well as approaches the playwrights and producers have been utilizing when merging lowbrow music genres, such as hip hop and rock, with highbrow culture of Broadway. These merges might be considered as an innovative renewal of such traditional genre as Broadway musicals. The examples will feature excerpts from musicals featuring African American folk music, such as Hamilton: An American Musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and In the Heights. Together with a number of other examples, the presentation will illustrate the crossover of lowbrow and highbrow cultures on Broadway stages with the possible development in the following decades. |
