Keywords South Slavic literatures; school reading; controversy
Description This paper deals with a topical problem of the so-called mandatory reading in Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia. Focus is put on representation of South Slavic authors in high school literature classes, and commentary on two controversial situations persistent in all the discussed areas. Firstly, it is problematic position of renaissance and baroque literature of Dubrovnik in context of national understanding of literature division in current post-Yugoslav countries. The second problem is perception of authors as Ivo Andrić or Petar Petrović Njegoš, that are being viewed as part of more national literature traditions at the same time. Both problems are present in the social discourse of these countries as well and tends to wake tempers or misunderstandings.
