Description | The contribution presents a view of B. Balbín from the perspective of 20th and 21st century generations and then focuses of Balbín’ relationship to explanations of proper names during the period dealt with. The analysis of selected parts of his geographical encyclopaedia Miscellanea historica regni Bohemiae proved that he used explanations of names to confirm the given facts (the town of Písek - “sand” - named after the sand bringing gold and washed on the banks of Otava river). He did not attempt at giving explanations of his own, taking them from other sources, but judging them critically. For example, he refuses incidental segmentations of the name Litoměřice = líto mi tý měřice (měřice “a fee for grinding”). For his critical approach to explanations that were non-scholarly, but common at those times, he deserves a prominent place in the history of onomastics |
