| Description | Translating Bible texts into Written Kalmyk was a result with a long-lasting influence of the otherwise unsuccessful missionary activity of Moravian Brethren among Kalmyks. Moravians' contacts with Kalmyks began following the foundation of a Moravian colony Sarepta (1765). Despite a lack of deeper education, material and organisational support from Moravian headquarters, several Moravian Brethren from Sarepta tried to live among Kalmyks gaining an uncommon insight into Kalmyk lifestyle and culture, leaving remarkable ethnographic observations in their diaries. From the very beginning of their study of Kalmyk language and writing, Moravians tried to express their faith in this language and in 1770s-1780s proceeded a Harmony of Gospel written in well-mastered Written Oirat found in Moravian Archives Herrnhut. Since 1810, Moravian member Isaak Jacob Schmidt started to work on earlier partial translations and between 1815–1827 published the whole New Testament in both written Oirat and Mongolian. |
