Description This contribution focuses on the work of Vasily P. Botkin (1811–1869), Russian journalist and literary critic, who belonged, together with P. V. Annenkov and A. V. Druzhinin, to the representatives of the so-called aesthetic literary criticism. In the 1840s-1850s, the aforementioned critics were one of the leading opponents of Russian radical thinking and belonged to well-known figures of Russian liberal thinking. The contribution shows the influence of European liberalism on two Botkin’s works. First of them is Letters on Spain and the other is an essay of literary criticism concerning the poetry of A. A. Fet. In the essay, Botkin advocates the notion of freedom of the individual, specifically absolute artistic freedom that mustn’t be restricted by any societal needs. Furthermore, Botkin advocates the significance of poetry in an age of prose when economic, scientific and technical issues turned the attention of the society towards seemingly more practical matters.
