Description | In his short story, M. P. Artsybashev depicts a history of a scientific experiment in which a famous European scientist makes a young African man believe that all the „miracles“ he shows him mean that he is a god. Explaining the scientific principles of all the „miracles“ to the man, the doctor deprives him of his concept of the world, which leads to his suicide. Thereafter the doctor realises that rationality cannot bring any holistic sense of the world. In an allegoric way, the short story shows not only the barriers of a totally rational attitude to the mans being but also the wide gap between the Russian terrorists and revolutionaries and the Russian common people. Artsybashev thus expresses his fear that any revolution can be fatal for both these sides. |
