Description | This paper introduces the starting points and principles of the process of syllabus and material design of an ESP course “English for midwifes” at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University Brno. The main principles of the design, such as the scaffolding and learner-centered approach, focus on specific skills and the use of authentic and relevant content are discussed and illustrated with examples from the syllabus and course materials. Special attention is paid to the role of translation in the lessons as one of the means used to reduce the students´ anxiety. Finally, the term “golden hour” used in midwifery is related to the context of ESP lessons where the teacher and students benefit from each other´s expertise and hopefully create a bond that will help them overcome the difficulties that may arise in the process of learning. |
