Description | The study analyzes the reception of the city of Rome in two important Early Modern Czech travelogues. It focuses on the monuments of pagan antiquity that are described in the travelogue of Friedrich of Donin (c. 1574-1634; travelogue written probably shortly after 1610, not printed). Donin's descriptions were confronted with the contemporary state of preservation of the monuments and especially with the descriptions in the travelogue of Christopher Harant of Polzice and Bezdruzice (printed in 1608); Harant did not visit Rome, he, however, described some Roman monuments or their types. The paper pointed out the remarkable resemblance of some of the descriptions and Donin's occasional inaccuracy in the identification of the monuments; it analyzed the bibliographical quotations that are present in Harant's travelogue, and, finally, it evaluated the role of autopsy (or its absence) and stereotypes. The study is based on the conference paper of the same name that was presented in June 2018 in Nitra (Od mesta k ríši). |
