Description The aim of this text is to present theoretical-methodological approaches and preliminary results of field research, which took place in the Buddhist temple of Fo Guang Shan in Vienna (FGS) in November 2017. The main goal of this research was to explore the relationship between religious material culture, self-presentation of the Fo Guan Shan as the Buddhist organization of Chinese-Taiwanese origin, and its impact on the growth/decrease of the community. The ethnographical analysis of religious material culture and strategies of self-presentation of FGS partly has shown why the minority of the FGS members with a different socio-cultural background than the order itself is today essentially extinct.
