Description | Southern Europe has virtually no open-air museums, yet there are several open-air museums in the Balkans. The least known are those in the southern parts of the Balkans, which are also missing from European guidebooks. Often the only source of information for foreign visitors is their websites. The terms used for open-air museums in Balkan languages basically copy the English term open-air museum. The author describes individual open-air museums, their current form, activities and critically evaluates their web presentations. All of them were established in the last half century, they are regional, medium and small museums and present pre-industrial times, mainly buildings and technologies. They bring to life working practices, folklore and customs in their premises and buildings, offer interactive discovery and educational programmes and sell museum products. There are many more monuments of traditional architecture protected in situ in the Balkans. In addition to urban conservation reserves, these include courtyard solitudes with museum status (in cities and towns, in Serbia and Croatia, and in rural areas), often the birthplaces of prominent personalities, and the homes of wealthy merchant families, which are essentially the smallest museums in the countryside. The author presents Balkan outdoor museums in the broader context of national ideologies, the protection of cultural heritage, the position of traditional folk culture in the cultural system, and the limits of building materials and construction. |
