| Description | A probe into the development of Czech private letters is mapping changes within the past ninety years (from 1929 to 2019), i.e. during the lifetime of the personality to whom this collection of papers is dedicated. The material is based on corpus processing of letters from the archive of private correspondence that has been built at the Department of Czech Language, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, since the 1990s. The contribution deals with issues of epistolary etiquette, of dynamism of vocabulary and of grammatical means of expression used in private correspondence and partly also with pragmatic aspects. The explanations always follow the situation in the 1920s, comparing it with the situation during the previous decades, and then provide characterization of main developmental tendencies to the present day. Letters used as the material basis are compared with school textbooks of Czech, which proves variability of requirements relating to epistolary etiquette during the 20th century. |
