Description The article deals with the formation and development of the oldest monument protection authorities, which also operated in Slovakia. He pays special attention to the situation after the establishment of the Czechoslovak republic, when the foundations of the current protection of cultural and natural heritage in Slovakia were laid. The center of attention is the creation of the Government Commissariat for the Protection of Monuments in Slovakia (1919-1922), which was later transformed into the State Office for the Protection of Monuments, initially operating under the State Inspectorate of Archives and Libraries (1919 - 1951) was one of the major institutions operating in the first half of the 20th century and provided in particular the protection of cultural heritage kept in archives and libraries. The position of state inspector was replaced by two important personalities of Slovak historiography, Václav Chaloupecký and Branislav Varsik.
