Description Many have already heard about the battle of Adrianople which took place in the year 378 AD and during which the Roman army was destroyed and the Emperor Valens died. Only few people know the battle of Abrittus in the year 251 AD in which Emperor Decius and his son Herennius Etruscus died and the Roman army was annihilated. However, in the 3rd century, the Roman Empire was still able to cope with such a catastrophe. New Emperor Trebonianus Gallus had to conclude a disadvantageous agreement with Goths in the year 251 AD, who demonstrated their military strength and became one of the main enemies of Rome. Despite the defeat of Decius and his army, the Romans did not learn from their mistakes in the battle near Abrittus, which led to the fall of Empire in the west two hundred years later. The aim of the following text is to explore the posibility whether Roman commanders could learn from the mistakes of Emperor Decius and avoid another disaster at Adrianople.
