Description | “Byzantium” is a notion which was applied to the Eastern Roman Empire during the 17th century. Later it became a concept crucial for describing cultural and artistic identities of the Orthodox world. However, does this modern notion correspond to a pre-modern reality? And what are the challenges produced by the use (and overuse) of a modern concept for the understanding of the past? Finally, is it not that Byzantium has progressively become a powerful virtual reality, where everybody can project his/her dreams and prejudices? |
