Description | Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is responsible for a serious lifelong infection characterized by gradual disruption and exhaustion of the immune system. Signs of infection are initially unobtrusive and can easily be overlooked for several years, but subsequently the individual goes to the AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) stage, when its defense mechanisms are so exhausted, that it succumbs to opportunistic infections or malignancies. The transmission of the virus is primarily through sexual intercourse, blood or blood derivatives, and also from mother to fetus. The majority of the infected are homosexual individuals. |
