| Description | This study examines the creation of the autobiographical myth in the later works of Bohumil Hrabal. In spite of the journalistic or autobiographical nature of these texts (starting with The Magic Flute), the referential, mimetic reading becomes problematic. Hrabal continues using his poetics, transforming reality into a text that has an aesthetic impact. His work adopts the form of a collage, he uses the technique of seamless narrative, he plays around with genre conventions and narrative perspectives, and uses a number of cultural, philosophical and intertextual references. The result is an ambiguous narrative, a text that challenges the reader in its openness to interpretation. Part of this game with the reader is Hrabal's creative approach to his life experience (fictionalization, palavering) as well as the creation of an autobiographical myth, which has a self-reflective nature. Viewed from this perspective, Hrabal's later works examine, among other subjects, the possibilities of autobiographical narrative and the nature of narrative identity. The tension between the mimetic and aesthetic readings of Hrabal is also studied with regard to the critical reception of his work (S. Rothová, M. Mládková, J. Čulík, Z. Polách's court case). |
