Description When searching for the essence of the European idea of music conservatories we can start from the situation in which the conservatory as a term occurs in language and also from its historical development. Both approaches respect the fact that it is a specific, artificially created environment. The Latin term artificiosus means something artificial and unnatural; artificium means art, craft, skill, talent or technique. In all respects, the conservatory also appears as an institution for preserving and maintaining individuals in need of special care.
