Description The paper focuses on the easternmost part the church of Hagia Eirene. Study of its unique furnishing and decoration offers two main probable interpretations. Based on the exceptional synthronon in the apse, the aniconic iconography in the conch, the words spoken in liturgy and prayer, the presence of the relics and last but not least the movement of the living ecclesia, I believe that the images within the church of Hagia Eirene were also created otherwise than only with materials. It will thus be possible to analyze the rhetoric and iconological understanding of the inner space of the said church in Constantinople in the second half of the eighth century, both during as well as outside of the liturgy.
