| Description | The chapter discusses an important but long neglected aspect of the Hussite wars - the institute of truce or armistice, which were despite the church bans abundantly sued even by the Catholic nobility. In the first part, the author introduces the development of the institute of truce in medieval military science and military law and especially in the milieu of the Hussite wars, where treaties on armistices sometimes contained even religious provisions. The author broaches the question whether or to what extent these provisions, or the actual fact of the conclusion of an armistice between the warring sides contributed to the birth of early, although very limited religious tolerance in Hussite Bohemia. In the second part, the author attempts to resolve this question based on a thorough analysis of the exceptionally comprehensive set of treaties on armistices from Hussite Bohemia: the truces between South Bohemian magnate Oldřich of Rožmberk (Rosenberg) and his clientele on the one hand and the Tabor confederacy and other Hussite groupings on the other hand. Int the third part, the South Bohemian source corpus is compared with the more modest collection of treaties on armistice from South Moravia, to wchich the author recently devoted an independent monograph. In the conclusion, the author comes to the opinion that the institute of truce undoubtedly contributed to the emergence of an atmosphere, in which it was possible to reach (provisional) religious reconciliation and the end of the Hussite wars. |
