Description | The Jacobean tragedy The Virgin Martyr (1620) is the first professional theatre adaptation of the medieval legend about St Dorothy. With the help of English itinerant actors, its shortened version reached the European continent in the course of the 17th century where it became a stock piece in the repertories of German itinerant companies. Johann Georg Gettner's manuscript play Die Heylige Martyrin Dorothea (1691?), which was discovered by Christian Neuhuber in Swiss Solothurn in 2011, provides material for a unique analysis of both texts whose aim is twofold. Not only does it illustrate the adaptation process in the transformation of an English Jacobean Renaissance tragedy into a German Baroque tragedy. It also sheds light on the staging conditions of itinerant actors in Europe at the end of the 17th century. |
