Description The paper presents a set of elementary exercises designed at the Department of English and American Studies, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University. An increasing need has been identified in the translator training programme of the Department for exercises that would address certain recurrent errors, occurring both in Czech orthography, grammar and syntax, and as a result of interferences between SL and TL. The translation teachers therefore launched a minor project in order to, within the current year, (1) design on-line exercises, based – at much as it is feasible – on real texts, (2) compile a web page that will integrate all previous tools used at the Department, and present them comprehensibly to fresh translation students. The new exercises are of a rather old-fashioned type: they use drill and repetition of each phenomenon, resembling an older beginners’ textbook of a language rather than a college material. The paper presents a map of the addressed errors, together with examples of the exercises , and discusses the adequacy of using down-to-earth methods, such as drills and assigning exercises to students in response to specific errors, in an advanced translator training programme. A brief inventory of previous projects, with their present status, will be also presented.
