Description The two levels scheme «national language -- dialects of the national language» usually employed for the Romance languages is from different points of view not suitable for every language. In the perspective of the historical evolution of the languages it is better to employ a tree levels scheme: 1st original linguistic continuum; 2nd political fragmentation of the continuum; 3rd regional dialectological subdivision. The scheme is presented on cases of the Rhaeto-Romance situation (Romansh, Ladin, Friulian) compared to the Balkanic (Romanian dialects) and Pyrenaic situation (Occitan, Gascon, Catalan).
