Description Vladimír Groh (1895-1941) has been the first specialized professor of Ancient history at the Masaryk University Brno. Already during his study years, he could successfully argue against significant foreign researchers in this branch on the high professional level. Gradually, he became one of them, especially in the field of the earliest Roman history. He always regarded Humanities as an instrument of human cultivation, as well as an effective weapon of various political polemics. Groh was an important propagator of science, e.g. a member, secretary, president, and the vice-president of the scientific society called Matice moravská. He became involved in the domestic resistance against the nazi-occupation of the Czech Republic and was one of the first personalities executed within the martial law, declared after Reinhard Heydrich became the so-called protector of Bohemia and Moravia. He was an accurate scientist, using the knowledge of various scientific disciplines, including natural science, in the historical research, he ranked among the researchers urging complexity in the conception of the history and the application of humanities for the requirements of a society.
