Description The article is concerned with Kobers edition Album Bibliothek deutscher Originalromane (1846–1861), which established itself in the German speaking area as a distinguished, competitive enterprise that had endured on the literary market unlike other, similarly designed editions of original German-language novels (Bibliothek Deutscher Originalromane by O. Wigand in Leipzig, Deutsche Bibliothek. Sammlung auserlesener Originalromane by Carl Meidinger in Frankfurt am Main) that went gradually out of business. Kobers edition was intended for all German-language readers regardless of their ethnicity, and its purpose was to offer its readership original German-language works instead of the widely spread translations from French or English. Kobers edition drew its inspiration most probably from Cottas Volksbibliothek der deutschen Klassiker, which was making stable business on the market at the same time. A comparison of both of these editions might bring additional, meaningful findings.
