Description The paper is focused on discursive analysis of headlines and journalistic leads of selected texts of contemporary Russian and Czech political journalism, in which assertion and its substitution for presupposition is used as a means of language manipulation. The aim of the study is to show that covert assertion, along with the disproportionate use of expressive lexic and irony, is one of the distinguishing features of non-authentic journalism and propaganda.
