Description | This work analyses the fiction of the Portuguese writers Branquinho da Fonseca (1905-1974) and Domingos Monteiro (1903-1980) from the point of view of the uncanny, known in the Portuguese literature as “insólito”. The theoretical frame is inspired by the research of Flavio Garcia, for whom the “insólito” contains a large scale of modalities as strange, weird, extraordinary, supernatural or unnatural. Simultaneously, the concept of “insólito”, worked out by Carlos Reis as a category of un-typical (due to its etymological origin) is also observed. All the analyzed texts by Branquinho da Fonseca and Domingos Monteiro are uncanny (“insólito”): we can find here an inspiration by the Iberian folclore (motives of the ghost, white wolf, treasure, prophet), the images of doubles, paranormal phenomena, images of the haunted jungle and house. |
