Description The present contribution analyzes the terms chřib and brdo in their appellative and proprial roles in the space, where the Slavic languages were and are used, and evaluates their semantic relations. It is possible to conclude that one term is a calque on another. It leads a new etymological solution for chřib: an adaptation of the West Germanic term *xri:bo:n ‘rake’.
