Description | The purpose of this article is to analyze information about the manifestations of political dependence of the three Finno-Ugric people of the Volga region, Mordovians, Mari and Udmurts. Continuing the modern tendency of studying the relations between the center of Russia and the regions, we turned to a complex of sources, which is rarely used in this topic, that is, to the notes of Western European travelers of the 16th – 18th centuries. When identifying aspects of dependence, two main points were highlighted, these are the payment of tribute, in fur or in cash, and the sending of recruits to the army. Both factors have been studied over several centuries, which made it possible to establish differences between the perception of travelers in the 16th and 17th centuries. and their followers in the XVIII century. The tales of foreigners, despite their subjective nature, are unique material for looking at events in Russia from the outside. |
