Description | There are periods in French Canadian and Quebec literature that swarm with foreigners, including strangers of pure Quebec origin. As proof of this, the novel Des nouvelles d´Édouard (1984) by Michel Tremblay, which subtly shows the cultural divorce between Quebec and France by illustrating an important step in the process of the empowerment of Quebec literature. Tremblay's fiction sheds light on the differential awareness of Quebec literary criticism after 1945 and is part of the process of redefining the literary canon where the notion of foreigner, migrant and immigrant acquires a positive value. Our subject has three objectives: (1) to illustrate the thematization of the foreigner on a particular case of the inverted presentation, that of oneself as a foreigner; (2) to sketch the relationship between this thematization and the literary institution in the process of defining its autonomy; (3) to indicate the positive transformation of the notion of foreigner/ stranger in the literary and critical discourse of Quebec literature. |
