Description The present study deals with the relation between the gymnastics organization Sokol and art in the Czech lands. The Sokol movement, founded in Prague in 1862, primarily focused on physical exercises and support for national consciousness. However, during its active years from the 1860s to the 1940s, the movement produced a large number of artworks as well, partly because of the influence of Miroslav Tyrš, one of the founders, who was interested in art all his life and endeavoured to increase cultural life in Bohemia. The study is divided into 5 chapters: the first explains the beginning of Sokol’s visual identity, how the costume, banner, and emblem originated. The second chapter describes the art propaganda of mass gymnastics rallies, which artists designed the Sokol posters and postcards, and which visual symbols they chose. Afterwards, the unique architecture of the Sokol gym buildings is evaluated. Several representative examples illustrate which architects built the gyms and which style they considered appropriate. The fourth chapter briefly presents some public memorial statues and monuments dedicated to Sokol officials. Finally, several objects of applied art are mentioned, such as theatre curtains, badges, medals, coins, etc., which show the extent to which Sokol influenced the history of art.
