Description | The sculptor Albín Polášek has passed through time unheralded despite leaving behind a lifetime of work, much of which still stands in public places both in the United States and the Czech Republic. By analyzing representative sculptures from his oeuvre, while at the same time setting them in the context of his American contemporaries, the paper will put forward the proposition that Albín Polášek must be viewed as an American sculptor; albeit one that was inspired by antiquity and the Italian renaissance and whose heart rested in his Moravian countryside. The paper aims to broaden the current understanding of Polášek’s artistic activity and merge the influences of New World idealism with the moral earnestness he felt in his Slavic heritage. |
