| Description | The purpose of the article is to analyse the program text «Two Souls» by M. Gorky. In this text the author compares and juxtaposes the value reference points of the West and the East, reflected in culture, in cultural, social and psychological terms. The analysis of this publicistic text showed that the writer considers culture in broad terms and he takes into account the peculiarities of the general principles of the structure of society, these principles influence the formation of an individual. The writer describes the «eastern» elements of Russian reality and he recognizes them as unproductive. He believes that the priority of rationalism and an active approach to life, typical for the culture of the West, will contribute to the development of the individual and the democratization of social life in Russia. From these positions, Gorky considers the situation in Russia in 1917?1918 but two years later. He criticizes it and creates «Untimely Thoughts». In articles published in the newspaper «New Life», Gorky develops the ideas previously formulated in the article «Two Souls», since the problem of culture, its present and future, is central in his publicistic work of the second decade of the twentieth century. |
