Description Destruction of archaeological sites by construction activities without archaeological research is not an exception in the Czech Republic, but rather a common practice. Sanctions by the authorities are rare and of a small extent. For this reason, heritage preservation is ineffective, and the protection of the archaeological heritage is not adequate. Which factors affect the situation in field? The main attention will be paid to the means of protection of archaeological monuments defined in Monuments Act, (even a few years ago still effective in Slovakia). The basic legal framework, practical example, collected data on the activities of administrative bodies and a brief comparison with the legal order of the Slovak Republic will be presented.
