Description This lecture was devoted to the question of an abstract, aniconic, culture in the Middle Ages. Its aim was then to reflect on the meaning of the visual culture, which is to mediate the encounter with what is invisible - that is, with the invisible deity or saint. Abstraction thus becomes a tool for contemplation.
