Description | Following on from last year's presentation, which dealt with semicircular benches known as scholae in Pompeii, this year's article will deal with identical buildings, which are, however known mainly as exedrae. These structures, identical in shape and function to the Pompeian scholae, appear in the eastern Mediterranean as early as the end of the Classical period, but are characteristic mainly for the Hellenistic and Roman periods. By location these structures are not limited only within the funeral space. They can be found also in the cities and within sacred districts as part of procedural routes. Taking into account the current pandemic situation, the paper will focus on a brief introduction to the study of these structures, outlining the main problems of research, research questions and methodology. |
