Description | The lecture dealt with the search for the national language in Greece in the 19th and 20th centuries, the so-called language question. Its roots go back to before the Greek National Liberation Revolution, to the end of the 18th century when a debate broke out in Greek society under the influence of the Enlightenment as to which form of Greek was suitable for scholarly literature. With the emergence of an independent Greek state and the need to establish its official national language, this debate escalates: Katharevusa and dimotiki, the archaizing and popular form of Greek, stand in the imaginary struggle. We have followed their rivalry and the consequences that diglossia has brought to modern Greece. |
