Description | Sound symbolism becomes recently an interesting topic in cognitive linguistics. As well as with their growing role in culture, created languages / conlags are also a hot topic. Our study used experimental approaches to study sound symbolism in the form of the hypotheses: i) a priori and ii) a posteriori sound symbolism. In a questionnaire study, respondents were asked to select one of two words (sound sequences) in a way that they think instinctively would match the presented meaning. We used words from natural languages, from created languages, and from randomly generated sound sequences. This paper presents the resulting findings, namely that respondents generally fail to associate meanings and sound forms, but they have favourite sound sequences. |
