Description Unit 1 of Module 1 focuses on non-destructive methods in archaeology. These non-destructive methods are now a standard part of pre-excavation activities. They help us not only predict the presence or absence of archaeological features but also represent a completely different type of research in the field of localization and documentation of archaeological sites without their disruption or irreversible destruction. Their methodological procedures are therefore very important not only for the preparation of field research, but their importance is also in the field of protection and documentation of archaeological sites. Non-destructive methods include several general categories, e.g. remote sensing (RS), application of scientific methods, surface survey or limited interference below the ground. In the following lessons of Unit 1, attention is focused on remote sensing of the Earth through the LiDAR method, geophysical methods, and remote sensing applications (online map servers). Selected methods are described in terms of the principles of operation, instrumentation, but especially practical applications during the research, which is demonstrated in selected case studies. The advantage of these methods is their relative availability to the general public, respectively there are several online servers that provide freely available data for free, or there are services that will provide you with the data you need for a fee.
