Description | During the renovation of the grounds below Pernštejn Castle, itbwas necessary to subject the area to a comprehensive archaeological research, which comprised two distinct stages. The first took place in 2016 and aimed to gather maximum informa- tion on the appearance and layout of the garden premises, including detailed data on the extant structures. The second stage, conducted in 2019, consisted in standard protective archaeological excavations. Its purpose was to document the sites disturbed or exposed during the construction works and, possibly, identify their value as cultural heritage, so that they could be either integrated into the restoration plan or re-covered and con- served underground. The research was exceptional in terms of its contribution to the restoration of the castle grounds: generally, archaeological research tends to be a less than welcome com- ponent of large-scale construction projects, yet at Pernštejn it played an active part in the whole restoration effort. In other words, the geophysical survey, archaeological probes, and the subsequent archaeological excavations were of great impor- tance to the process of renovation. The survey helped partly to discern the original layout of the flat areas of the garden, and its findings had a substantial impact on the intended appearance of the grounds as projected in the initial stages of resto- ration. The preliminary probes provided answers to a number of questions concerning the construction and current condition of various structures that had historically been located on the premises. The archaeological research proper, carried out simultaneously with the construction works, confirmed the validity of the initial conjectures about the layout of the gardens and delivered additional detailed information about their past appearance and chronological development. |
