Description The study deals with the theme of the opera Lesův pán, the first and only opera on the theme of the poet Máj by the Czech Romantic poet Karel Hynek Mácha, and its reviews. This opera was composed by Váša Suk, who later worked as the conductor of the bolshoi Theater in Moscow; the libretto was written by the Czech poet Josef Václav Frič. Although the title of the opera refers to the poem Máj, some storylines also refer to another work by Mácha, the novel Cikáni. The premiere took place in Kharkiv in february 1900 and was followed three years later by the Czech premiere in Prague. Although the opera met with huge success in Kharkiv, the reactions were quite the opposite in Prague. The reviewers criticized in particular the text of the libretto, inspired by the famous poem, and the music was, in their view, old-fashioned and nit inventive enough.
