Description | The abbey church of Conques is harmoniously settled in nature and constructed in a commanding place in what we call landscape. Historical documents as well as archeological research reveal that during the Middle Ages, Conques was populated more than today and its surroundings were more cultivated. Early medieval foundation legends describe the transformation of a wilderness into a fertile and even happy land of Conques, as is often the case in such sources. This contribution analyzes these early medieval descriptions of landscape and discusses the monastery's role within the transformation of its surroundings. |
