| Description | The biography of St. Ansgar, an Archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen and a missionary of Scandinavia, authored by Rimbert, his successor in the episcopal see and in his missionary work, is the only source created for the 9th-century Scandinavia by eyewitnesses of the events there. We obtain, for example, unique information about the gradual growth of the power of tribal kings, about still functioning institutions of the tribal establishment, about the beginnings of cities, international trade, Viking conquests, but mainly about the concept of Christ and Christianity in the thought of polytheistic Germans of northern Europe. The work is also a testimony to the then ecclesiastical as well as secular politics, not only directly, but also by how its content developed during the rewriting. In addition, Rimbert’s work shows strong traces of the Carolingian reform of education. His Latin is very advanced, it tries to express visions, mystical experiences, emotions. If today’s translator wants to reproduce the text as accurately as possible, he will encounter many difficulties of interpretation. Vita Anskarii is a testimony to how the language of the Frankish Empire, after a great decline, returned to the goal: to the Latin of the ancient Romans. |
