Description | The Juvencus’ work is the first example of the late antique literary genre known as biblical epic. Due to its author’s aim to versify not only gesta but also verba Christi it includes also the theoretical passages presenting the core of the Christ’s teaching, the Sermon on the Mount among them. What, however, was the result of this epicizing transformation? What rhetorical devices did Juvencus apply? How did they affect the original biblical text and what was the proper function of this versified sermon in the 4th century Christian literature? These are the questions which are going to be answered through the comparative analysis of the selected passages of the oratio montana in its Matthean and Juvencinian versions. |
