Description This paper attempts to developed a unified analysis of two types of root alternation in the present tense of Portuguese verbs. One type arguably involves a floating height feature affecting the root vowel. The other one is an instance of suppletion. But the two types of alternation trace exactly the same pattern through the present tense paradigm. Basic principles of Nanosyntax are invoked to account for this.
