Description | The article studies the slang vocabulary used by smugglers and bandits in the novel Astucia (1865–1866) by Luis G. Inclán. The evolution of the slang vocabulary in the regional varieties of Spanish is not easy to study. Slang does not usually appear in the sources traditionally used to investigate the history of Spanish. The only exception is literary texts that try to reproduce orality and communicative spontaneity. However, it is necessary to consider that slang is usually portrayed in such sources in a stereotyped way. Therefore we have to apply methodological filters of historical pragmatics and avoid possible interpretation. The slang and popular Mexican vocabulary before the twentieth century are very little studied, and the present study tries to fill this knowledge gap in the field. |
